REMOTE
MEDICINE
The
Field Course for Remote Medical Service
Mission Statement
Who We Are.
Remote Medicine and its partner, INMED, are nonprofit organizations promoting
long term progress in the health of impoverished populations through
two venues: direct medical assistance and formal field training
of Western physicians in both technical and ethical aspects of resource-scarce
medical practice.
Types of Assistance.
Medical assistance is aimed at long-term improvement
in the health of impoverished populations. Practically, this is
provided in the form of staffing for clinics and hospitals, donation
and training in use of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, construction
of health facilities, and development of essential programs for
lasting health maintenance. Our emphasis is on education and the
development of pragmatic medical care infrastructure.
Field Training Target.
We seek to educate emergency medicine, surgery, and primary
care residents about health care provision in an environment of
scarcity. These residents are physicians still completing training
in their field of specialization who have not yet settled into practice.
Why This Target?
Progress in poverty eradication is complex and requires
a unique set of skills in those who succeed in such service. These
attributes include altruism, a work ethic, independence, and resourcefulness.
Generally speaking, resident physicians epitomize such attributes.
Furthermore, they are already trained in skills that are of fundamental
usefulness for developing world service.
What We Offer.
An eight-week structured field course in a most-needs
region of the Third World. We currently have access to over a dozen
clinical sites with on-site physician mentors who can provide a
structured setting to both learn and practice medicine in the developing
world. The course includes textbooks, solar and water equipment
for use in austere living environments, CME credit, and arrangements
for room and board.
For
physicians or students working abroad outside our courses, we also
offer the equipment and texts for purchase at their wholesale prices.
